CHAPTER 24

With every word Kalmaric spoke, John could feel her glamor trying to influence him. Wave after wave battered against his mind, looking for chinks in his armor, anything that might slip through. And each time her glamor made progress, she doubled down in that direction, slowly guiding her offer until it matched what she assumed was John’s greatest desire. He let her speak, listened as she poured out honeyed words, and burned each one away as it approached.

“Enough,” he said finally, his hand cutting through the air and leaving a burning line of blue flame behind. “I’ve listened to you prattle long enough. I’ve given you more time than you would give me, and yet you’ve said nothing even remotely interesting. World domination? If I wanted it, I could have it. Ruling over myriad worlds? As simple as turning over my hand. After seeing my power, who wouldn’t pledge allegiance? Women? I have the best one. Respect? I have friends I can count on. There’s nothing you can give me that I don’t already have, in spades. But there is one thing I need, and the truth is, I’m here to take it.”

Taking a step forward, John snapped his fingers and the blue line of flame transformed into a dozen burning arrows.

“And that’s peace. And maybe your head mounted on my wall.”

With a scream of rage, Kalmaric launched herself from her throne, darting toward John so quickly the world itself seemed to shudder. He stepped forward, a sword appearing in his hand, chopping down swiftly to meet her. At the same time, flame arrows launched straight up into the sky, moving faster and faster until they were little more than blue blurs. The higher they got, the closer together they drew until, merging into one another, they created one single blue arrow as large as a man.

Down below, John’s sword flashed as he battled against Kalmaric. Their bodies became invisible as they darted this way and that, leaving craterous footprints in the white marble of the square. High in the sky, the arrow reached the limit of the world and burned straight through the thick barrier that surrounded Resplendent. Kalmaric screamed in pain, and John saw some of her hair beginning to burn away. His eyes narrowed, and he suddenly realized how she had managed to create the barrier in the first place.

Taking a few steps back, he stared at her, his mind whirling, even as the hole in the sky started to close. The attack had destroyed a few hundred feet of the barrier, but Kalmaric held up her hand and clenched her fist, causing the hole to begin shrinking.

“You’re the world spirit,” John said, his eyes rising to the sky. “How did you⁠—”

“That’s right,” Kalmaric snarled, her body beginning to undergo a transformation.

Three pairs of wings burst from her back and her horns grew, curling as they thrust up into the air. Large fangs grew in her mouth, and scales began to appear on her arms.

“I am Resplendent, and there’s nothing you can do about it.
